Hello, good people of Tumblr. I'm Chloe, and the other writer for this blog is Judy. We are both seniors in high school in LA, and we recently saw the movie The Cove, the inspiration for our senior project.
For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, The Cove is a 2009 Oscar-winning documentary about dolphin slaughters in the small town of Taiji, Japan. Fishermen round up pods of dolphins and rope them off inside a little cove, where they leave them overnight. The next morning, dolphin trainers choose dolphins to be taken to places like Seaworld. The remaining dolphins are then mercilessly speared to death, turning the water in the cove to a bloody red. The slain dolphins are sent to the butcher, who chops them into choice cuts and sends the meat off to be sold and eaten.
Our goal is to raise awareness about this issue; the killing of these dolphins is not only inhumane, but consumption of dolphin meat can also lead to mercury poisoning. Clearly, this is an ethical issue. Judy and I want to educate others about the dolphin slaughter in Taiji. This blog is to help us do just that, as well as to document our senior project as we raise awareness in our community, conduct more research about The Cove, and raise money to donate to this cause.
